 Transfer Station

The hours of operation for the transfer station will be the first Saturdays of each month from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, excluding holidays. The attendant on duty will be present those days to assist in the proper disposal of items and charge a fee in accordance with the station's fee schedule, which is comparable to those of surrounding towns. Some of the bulky waste items that have been coming in to the transfer station have been small items, which can be placed curbside for garbage pick-up by
your existing town-approved hauler. This will save you money and will reduce taxes by lowering the town's tipping fees. If you are disposing of demolition, you will be required to show a building permit from Town to prove that the demolition took place in Town and is eligible for disposal.

If you have any questions about the operation of the Transfer Station, please call the Office of the First Selectman at 860-642-6-55 x 16.

The Town has also entered into an agreement with the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Resources Recovery Authority to provide the Town with Household Hazardous Waste Disposal. With a proof of residency in Franklin, you can dispose of hazardous waste at one of the disposal locations around the county. The schedule for the Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Days can be picked up at the Transfer Station or the Town Hall.

According to a fact sheet provided by hazardous waste disposal offiicials, household hazardous waste days are intended to protect groundwater from contamination from hazardous waste. When hazardous wastes are poured down the sink or toilet, dumped outside, or put out with the trash, they eventually make their way into our water supply. Hazardous materials which cannot be used up should be disposed of properly by licensed professional haulers. They have the facilities to incinerate, neutralize, store, or recycle them. When you are preparing to go to a hazardous waste disposal site, pack items carefully, keeping them in their original containers and safely resealing them. Never mix materials. Each household is limited to 20 total gallons of liquids and 100 total pounds of solids. Once at the hazardous waste disposal site, remain in your vehicle and follow the directions of the on-site official.

The following are items that will be accepted at collection sites:

Drain cleaners, oven cleaners, floor cleaners, metal polish, dry cleaning fluids, arts-and-crafts supplies, chemistry kits, aerosol cans, mercury products, photo chemicals, household batteries, firestarters, transmission fluid, engine or radiator flushes, gasoline, kerosene, wax, polish, brake fluids, rust preventative, wood preservative, oil-based paint, paint thinner, solvents, wood strippers, lead-based paint, degreasers, pesticides or herbicides with 2, 4, 5-T or Silvex, pest killers, muriatic acid, cesspool cleaners, fertilizers, inspect sprays, and pool chemicals.

Latex paint, car batteries, motor oil, antifreeze, explosives, fireworks, ammunition, gas cylinders, wood preservatives with penta chlorophenol, water reactive material such as peroxides or metallic sodium, radioactive materials such as smoke detectors, biologically active material, pcb's, and medications.

If you have questions about how a hazardous waste item should be disposed, contact the State of Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection at 860-424-3338.
